Housing Works is a nonprofit in New York City that provides services to people who are struggling with homelessness and are living with HIV/AIDS or are at risk of infection. On October 29, 2019, over 100 staff members at Housing Works staged a walkout to announce their campaign to unionize with RWDSU. As a member of the union’s communications team, I helped to coordinate the media launch that accompanied the walkout. This included timing the publication of a website dedicated to the unionization drive, the announcement of the rally with political leaders, the publication of a New York Times story, filming, and posting live updates of the rally to dedicated social media channels, as well as editing and publishing a same-day social media video. Following this rally and other actions led by workers, the unionization campaign at Housing Works was ultimately successful.
